Does anyone know of a data base of Shatranj games? by the way Nicholas Clapp claims that a chess set was unearthed at Ubar (shisur in Oman). How does this change the dating for the invention of chess?

H.J.R. Murray "A History of Chess" contains a large collection of Shatranj problems. Shatranj games were rarely recorded when the game was widely-played, because the slow opening was viewed casually.

You might want to check out the site "Chessvariants.com" for more information about both Shatranj and the Invention of Chess.

The Ubar site is basically Roman era, and recent scholarship suggests that chess was around in some form by the 3rd century AD (there is a mention in the Talmud).
