Does someone know when the three-colour 91-field board hex board was first used?

Was it in 1912 by Sigmund Wellisch, for his three-handed chess variant?

I know his variant is usually played on a three-colour board, but that doesn't mean he used one. Especially given that his variant does not have bishops or any diagonal riders (the knights leap one field diagonally).

Cheers,

Harry
