(Keith, great that you started this column NOTEWORTHY GAMES in the "Games you like best" category.) Just a little note regarding the nice game Force (Chris Huntoon does not provide his email address in his game, so I use this place here to contact him hopefully): With so many (namely 20) identical-looking pieces on each side, I found it hard to see during the game whether I was a point ahead, equal or behind. Knowing which of the three cases is valid is essential for playing well and hence for increased fun, of course. The necessity to count them all the time is quite tiring and distracting. Hence I would suggest that games with so many pieces display counters on the side showing the number of pieces left for each side. I feel this would make the otherwise well designed game more playable and attractive. Let's hope my lines can persuade Chris to add these counters. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Karl :-) |

Hello Karl, I agree it would be nice to have a piece counter on the side. I find myself mentally tracking the difference. If I take two pieces I think +2, if my opponent then takes three I think -1. But I frequently lose track and have to count remaining pieces. The problem with a piece counter is that it takes a lot of scripting workaround which eats away the the AI move generation time. The impact is large enough that I included scoring and nonscoring versions of QuadWrangle. Maybe with the increase in speeds of computers since Force came out a counter is more workable. |
