Same here. Need to know more about finding opponents online.

I thought of registering #ZoG on DALnet IRC
network. Unfortunately I cannot supply any useful
bots that would say, keep people upto date on IPs
open for games. but If someone else can help get
that flying, IRC is a great place for gaming get
togethers, Take Tetrinet for instance, the
multiplayer aspects of tetrinet work the same way
as ZoG's multiplayer does, so they use an IRC
channel to keep people up to date and make
games available to others.

Just my two Cents.

I have never really tested Net Play.

But I believe there might be issue with it.
I see Net Play as a peer2peer application.
This mean you need to have IP (or serial/modem/IPX) connectivity to be able to play.
This mean if both side of the game are behind firewall, they cannot play together.
It also mean that you need to know your opponent and opponent IP address.
There are tools to tell your friend your IP address every time you connect to the internet.
There are tools to find out if your friend are online or not (ICQ, IRC, ...).

Maybe wat is missing is a mailing list were Zillions-of-Games owner can ask other to challenge.

Now if Zillions-of-Games NetPlay was server based, then on that server you could "search" for opponent...

But I don't like centralised stuff. Just compare Gnutella and Napster.

A nice interface for finding opponent is MSO zclient on www.msoworld.com(?) and also www.abalone.com (the playability of that one is great and totally online (Java or Flash).

PS: So the answer is to ask Zillions to create a mailing list (like this stuff here) and give advice on how to organise online meeting. A more costly alternative (but that can make sure customer come back to the web site) is to build a web interface and modify Zillions netplay to add a pre-game opponent search.

Yes, you're right about all of those things, But
Tetrinet suffered from the same issues, which is
how the IRC channel made it easier, people would
come in, tell the bot they are hosting a game,
the bot would advertise the game in the channel
until someone joined. The Gnutella system may not
always be top notch, but you don't have to worry
about one big server going down like with
Blizzard's Battle.net or Sierras Won.net.

A Mailing list isn't Dynamic enough, not everyone
checks their mail every ten minutes, so you may
get an e-mail saying "So and so is hosting a
game" several hours after he/she already found an
opponent or gave up and closed the connection.

The problem with MSO is that the client lacks the
ability to play any game that they have not setup
previously.

Ideally, ZoG would want a Network like
Battle.net, or Search of some sort, but as you
said, that would require they add that feature,
and what not.

ZoG isn't very well suited for much other than
network play just yet, I'm Afraid to say.

Didnt Expect this post to be in this category but I was also wondering where we could implement net play. I will pass this message on, and check out DALnet. If any one else is still interested please let me know.

I just got on Dalnet, and found some hopeful news: #ZoG is now "operated by ChanServ" which automatically changed the topic to 'Welcome to Zillions of Games on DALnet! [Still Under Construction]' I was still the only person there, but at least that is progress of a sort. Is there a specific time during the week when people are more likely to show up there?

Could you post more information on getting set up to play by IRC. I searched for Dalnet & Chanserv and got 21,000 hits. I don't know how to get started.

First, you need software that will get you on IRC. One such sw is mIRC, which you can get at http://www.mirc.com/

It's free for 30 days. It has lots of help files to explain what IRC is, how to join channels, and so forth.

Yeah, I began to set up the DALnet #ZoG channel, and started working on a bot (a client that would help organise games)... but, my computer died!!! =[

So, egads...

Has anyone used game spy?

Could we use it for ZOG or is it just for the Quake players?

I scaned over some doc's on it but can't tell if it has anything to offer over an IRC channel.

GameSpy will scan your hard drive, looking for what games you have that match its list. It does not recognize ZoG. We could certainly use the chat rooms there to meet, but I dislike the commercials that constantly pop up when you run it. GS is for lots of games besides Quake, but not Zillions. I still think DALnet #ZoG would be a great idea. I hope Alex Stevens gets a new computer... :-)

Keep in mind, it is possible that the next version may have features that transcend the need for an irc channel... such as dedicated server, or gaming networks...

of course, when the next version is out, or what it will have is still sort of unclear to most of us.

Zillions 2.0 is out now, and it integrates well with MSN Messenger. I just downloaded Messenger, and I needed to get a new email address in order to be visible to other Messenger users. I started a thread in the "Desired Features" section asking users to list their Messenger emails, so players could get together. I don't think this transcends the potential usefulness that the #ZoG channel on DALnet IRC could provide, especially if it had bots that could pair opponents. Other chat services (AIM, ICQ etc.) are still useful, of course.

Just to be redundant:
My MSN Messenger handle is twixtplayer@hotmail.com
My AIM handle is hextwixt
My ICQ handle is 91521647
On IRC DALnet, look for twixter in channel #ZoG
My main email is twixt@cstone.net

I'm willing to play some games too. My account is megamau13@hotmail.com. I'm mainly interested in HEX, checkers variants, buffalo, but I will happily play almost anything.

Hey Guys, I should be getting ZOG 2.0 on CD in the mail any day now. In the meantime I have been adding you to my Contact group on MSN Messenger. I created a group specifically for ZOG players so I can easily identify you when you come online. My Messenger email is iron_lance@msn.com. Add me to your list when you can. Also check out our group at http://groups.msn.com/ChessVariantClub. A good place to organize games and post pics and messages.

Look forward to playing soon!

Howdy! If any of y'all would like to play online (I have ZOG 2.0), feel free to add me to your contact list for the various instant messenger programs:

MSN: CDRodeffer@hotmail.com
Y!: CDRodeffer
AIM: CDRodeffer
ICQ: 5306318

I like many abstract games, and among chess variants, I'm most interested in small board variants. Hope to see some of you online soon. Thanks!
