I just discovered a function in Zillions: if you keep the DEL key pressed then a rubber image appears and you can remove pieces by moving over them while pressing the mouse key. It's useful when setting up positions. /Mats |

I wasn't aware of that, but now that I look at the help file I see there are several other board editing features too (see below). Although I like the board editing feature, I wish it could be turned off. Not all games are able to deal adequately with impossible configurations which can easily be created this way. This is even more true of Axiom games which allow incremental updates of positional information. Some of these games protect themselves from board edits by outputting an error message when it occurs. Unfortunately, Zillions isn't designed to allow a board edit to fail, so I must exit the program following that. -- Greg Quick Arranging Zillions also allows you to use the keyboard to edit the board, supporting cut/copy/paste of pieces. This method is usually faster if there are a lot of changes to be made. These are the supported operations: Cut - Clicking a position with CTRL-X held down cuts a piece from that position. Alternate method: right-clicking with X key down. Copy - Clicking a position with CTRL-C held down copies a piece from that position. Alternate method: right-clicking with C key down. Paste - Clicking a position with CTRL-V held down pastes a piece onto that position. Alternate method: right-clicking with V key down. If you then drag the mouse, you can then paste onto multiple positions. Rotate - Clicking a position with CTRL-TAB held down changes a piece on that position, rotating through the possibilities. Alternate method: right-clicking with TAB key down. Clear - Clicking a position with the DELETE key held down clears a piece from that position. Alternate method: right-clicking with DELETE key down. If you then drag the mouse, you can delete pieces from all positions the cursor passes over. |

Sigh! Everything would be so much easier if one learnt to read manuals properly. By the way, this weekend I will publish a chess variant with a piece that captures in geometrical cooperation with the king, either at rectangular intersections, or at triangular intersections. That's really something! It's amazing that it works so well. I suppose mathematicians would such constructs interesting. I think it is the mathematician in me who is fascinated by these things. It's pre-published here: http://hem.passagen.se/melki9/correlatorchess.htm /Mats |
