Starting to learn the scripting language by editing a few existing games. I decided to modify the board of Trebuchet Chess slightly, so I loaded the .bmp for the board into a graphics program (GIMP), edited it, and exported my revised .bmp with a new name. Then I created my own copy of the .zrf, and made exactly one change: It now points to the new .bmp. But Zillions refuses to load it! The files are all in the correct places, I've typed the correct filename -- but no soap.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? There may be varieties of .bmp files, and I may have saved the wrong type -- wrong color depth, for instance. Suggestions?

Jim, please upload the offending bmp (as an attachment to a message in this forum) so we can take a look at it.

I'm going to upload the original (which is supplied with Trebuchet Chess) and my edited version (with the initials JA at the end of the filename). The difference, I've discovered, is that the original has indexed color, while the second is RGB. The file size is exactly the same, so it's a change in data formatting.

Okay, I've solved the problem. It has to be a 16-color indexed .bmp. GIMP doesn't seem to have an option that will export this file type, but Windows Paint does. When I open my RGB-formatted file in Windows Paint and do a Save As, I can save it in 16-color indexed format, and now it opens in Zillions. Yay!

I was able to duplicate your problem. When I open the offending image in Photoshop, I can see that it is set for indexed color. If I try to change it to bmp, it requires first converting it to gray scale (not good). So I did what you did. I opened it in MSPaint, made an edit, then undid the edit so the file would save. After doing that, it works with Z. So we both independently figured out the same workaround.

For what it's worth, I do all my graphics in Fireworks. In this way, I have a full vector editor and bitmap editor in one. (I rarely use the latter.) I can save it as a png file while I'm working on it, then export it to a bmp file when it's finished. Works like a charm. You can also import a bmp file (and various other formats), if you wish.

ZILLIONS-OF-GAMES WILL BE CONTRACTUALLY DELETED ON FEB 28, 2015

ZOG will be contractually deleted on Feb 28, 2015 -> all zrf's will be discarded -> Mallett and Lefler broke up, and split and quit -> Karl Scherer is trying to create a duplicate ZOG interface, to try to salvage some of the zrf's

So what's up with this Jon Steven Nelson message? Is there some kind of validity in this, or is he just doing his weird little troll dance?

We all know that the creators of Zillions are gone and the product is no longer supported. No big news there. Contract? Wait a minute, there is none. I would just ignore this nonsense.

On the other hand...

"Troll Dance" Lol! That would be a great name for a game!

The cgi-bin code for the website has gotten flaky too. I'm unable to access the game archive. Tonight I noticed a game called Camelot on brainking.com, and it looks pretty interesting, but the World Camelot Federation site points to the defunct cgi-bin for a Zillions implementation of Camelot.

Any chance anybody has that .zrf and would like to upload it as an attachment or email it to me?

Dan Troyka has implemented 5 Camelot games for Zillions. They are Cam, Camelot, Camette, Chivalry and Grand Camelot. I have emailed you a copy.
