Having just installed the new version 1.3, I want to inform all game designers of a potential compatibility problem:

The order of players was changed not only for the selection dialog, but also for the 'flip' command.
That means that all ZRFs which use multiple flips with multiple players in order to switch a piece to a particular owner must be revised.

I found out because my Mastermind clone was affected.

Another issue (seems unrelated): OCTI for Kids is missing most piece graphics. Haven't found the reason yet.

The reason for this is that v.1.3 no longer displays dummy piece graphics. I suspect this was unintentional.

Regarding reversing the order of the cycling of players that a "flip" causes, that was unintentional. I'm afraid the version that was uploaded at that time was a bit premature in that respect and was quickly pulled. The final release, which was uploaded at the end of the day, does not have that compatibility problem.

If you were one of those few people who got the first version, I've provided small patches for you here:

I apologize for the inconvenience. Note that if you downloaded 1.3 as a result of its announcement in the newsletter, you have the correct version because it was in place well before 1.3 was announced.

Regarding dummy pieces, "dummy" pieces were never supposed to be displayed in the first place. The point of the "dummy" keyword is to give authors a way to hide objects from the user, because the objects are just used as a detail of the implementation. So dummy pieces are not displayed for the same reason as pieces on dummy positions are not displayed: as far as the user is concerned they are not part of the game. I hope that's clear.

I am having trouble with the z122to130.exe patch. It executes fine, but the version# remains unchanged.

FYI: This turned out to be that he had 2 copies of Zillions on his machine. The patch is okay. Thx.

Regarding dummy pieces, it was pointed out to me that it wouldn't make sense for somebody to specify a bitmap for a piece-player combination that they didn't want displayed. (Pieces with no specified image are never displayed.) Therefore, with the release of 1.3.1, dummy pieces are again displayed if they have an image defined, but not displayed if they don't have image defined. While not my original intentions for "dummy", this does seem to provide the most flexibility. I hope everybody is happy with this.

1.3.1 is out now, so I believe everything in this thread has been addressed.

I use dummy pieces with image bitmaps for debugging rules files.

For normal play, I add the dummy keyword. But if I want to see what's going on, I remove the dummy keyword.

However, I think I can live with the new behavior.
