I needed a task for brushing up my Awk programming, so voila: Top 5 Prolific Zrf Authors (all categories):
| | | Name | # of Zrfs | | Karl Scherer | 285 | | W.D. Troyka | 66 | | L. Lynn Smith | 58 | | Uwe Wiedemann | 46 | | Chris Huntoon | 25 | | Top 5 Chess Zrf Authors:
| | | Name | # of Zrfs | | Karl Scherer | 46 | | Uew Wiedemann | 38 | | L. Lynn Smith | 31 | | Fergus Duniho | 16 | | W.D. Troyka | 15 | | Top 5 Other Zrf Authors:
| | | Name | # of Zrfs | | Karl Scherer | 58 | | W.D. Troyka | 43 | | L. Lynn Smith | 26 | | Chris Huntoon | 19 | | Laszlo Nagy | 9 | | Top 5 Puzzle Zrf Authors:
| | | Name | # of Zrfs | | Karl Scherer | 181 | | W.D. Troyka | 8 | | Bob Kraus | 6 | | K. Franklin | 5 | | Laszlo Nagy and Robert A. Kraus and Uwe Wiedemann | 2 apiece | | Based on the index-chess.html, index-others.html and index-puzzles.html pages (as grabbed at noon on 30 December, 2002). I didn't deal with Zrfs on chessvariants.com, etc. |

Nice list, but note that Bob Kraus and Robert A. Kraus are both me! I use Robert A. Kraus for games/puzzles that I have created and Bob Kraus when I implement puzzles that other people have created. And I always give them full design credit. Also note that I have posted 5 puzzles under Robert A. Kraus and 3 under Bob Kraus. Your list gives 2 and 6, respectively! AWK! Perhaps you should search for last name only? |

I also noticed that K. Franklin and Ken Franklin were counted separately (in my complete list). I'd thought about only using last names, but decided it was more hassle than I wanted to worry about for what my main purpose was (the logic was the hassle, not the coding). It would be nice to have an RSS feed so you could search by inventor, implementor, updates, etc. I just double-checked index-puzzles.html since my code looked ok to me and got the following: Robert A. Kraus - Extraction, Quantum Maze Bob Kraus - Capture-Nineteen Solitaire, Entropy Puzzle, Jump & Flip, Monster Maze, Step-Mazes, Tile Flips The captions on the web page don't match up exactly with the criteria you list for using the two different names - Jump & Flip, Monster Maze and Tile Flips are listed as by Bob Kraus but not as being invented by someone. |

I see what you mean. However, if you click on the games and get the large single page, they are listed the way I said. The reason is that those index-file listings were written by Zillions, while the single page listings were lifted from my files (I think!) Anyway, I too would love to have a searchable index file. |

I don't think you counted ZRFs at chessvariants.com. Most of my ZRFs are there but not here. I haven't been systematically keeping records on all my ZRFs, but according to the pages I have on them at my website, I have written at least 46 or so. I have probably written over 50, and Sisyphus is the only non-Chess one. |

Fergus, see last sentence of my original post. |

Although I maintain only 1 entry within the chess variants index at Zillions, the Symmetrical Chess Collection is nested- currently containing 35 unique games. [See its website for all latest revised or new *.zrf's.] By the way, I work hard to prevent the dreaded inverse relation between quantity and quality. |

I find your lists interesting and commend your spirit in compiling them. Unfortunately, to the moment accuracy is not a simple, straightforward task. Counting the entries upon Zillions and/or the CV Pages does not take the response time for posting into account or the inventors preferences regarding where to submit which games. Some- but not all!- of your most active inventors have personal game web sites. I recommend counting the games there wherever possible. Don't forget to count collaborative efforts involving 2 or more persons on a fractional basis. [Check the fine print of each game description for clues.] I have encountered some difficulty with uninventing flawed games. For instance, 2 games remain posted and available on Zillions (for the moment) which I do NOT want counted at all. I appreciate the tolerance of people such as Ed van Zon at Zillions because I have published appr. 100 games over the last 4 years but currently acknowledge only 35 games as being of acceptable quality. |

Derek, I'm glad you find the list interesting. I would encourage everyone, however, to keep in mind the first thing I wrote: I was looking for an excuse to brush up on AWK. I know it's not very accurate, but since I had the results I thought I'd share. If I was giving out a prize I'd figure out a better scheme. |

I understand. Besides, I would not recommend "giving out a prize" for quantity since quality (which is far more important) is complicated to measure and laden with contentious value judgments. |

Speaking of prizes. What ever happened to the best of zillions contest? Has it gone the way of the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus, syn Didus ineptus). Speaking of quality. how many games/puzzles have you finished that you didn't think worthy of posting? That question is for everyone not just Derek and Matthew. I have finished 9 and only posted 1. |

Well, I've posted every one I've finished (some only on my website)---I think they are all reasonably passable. A couple of the games I've done have been done better (I think) by someone else. Mind you, I haven't _invented_ any games. Only implemented other people's games. I have about 2 dozen that are half-finished (ok, maybe 1/4- or 1/16-th finished would be more accurate). |
