Hello, I saw yesterday the recommendation of the ConTEXT editor for use with the ZoG system. I have downloaded it and examined it and it appears to be exactly what is required. I hope that ZoG programming users, especially the ones new to ZoG programming, will try it out. It is better than the editors I have previously used. I found that the first download site gave me a corrupted file but the second, from Zagreb, gave a working download. Good Luck, Ronald W Brierley |

Hi Ronald, Can you please describe in more detail what you mean with "What is required"? I have a slow line and don't want to download anything unnecessary. Thanks, Karl |

Hello Karl, I will try to summarise the editor ConTEXT as I see it. It comes as an executable set-up file of about 1 MB. It is freeware. It is supposed to be small and quick. The size of the editor's execution file on my machine is 511 KB whereas one of the other text editors that I have been using is 1.2 MB. On inputting a program file the editor can colour highlight syntax appropriate to the programming language using a text file called a highlighter, which is specific to the type of programming file detected from the suffix of the file name. The highlighter files are editable to provide a customised system for the user. Two such files exist which are relevant to the ZoG system, for ZRFs and for ZSGs. A useful facility provided for the ZoG programmer is a shortcut from within the editor to the ZRF Language Reference File. For programmers who write programs for more than one programming language there are highlighter files for a number of programming languages, including Java and C++, which may be downloaded from the ConTEXT web site. For any programmer whose native language is not English alternative language files, including Hungarian, Chinese and Esperanto, are provided. Some of the facilities that a program coder might expect to exist in the editor are auto indenting, editable tab sizes, bracket matching detection, code templates, multiple file opening, unrestricted edit file sizes, easy access to recently edited files, remembering the position of the cursor for each file when next accessed, a graphical user interface within the editor for browsing the directories to find files to open, testing a file by submitting it for execution of without leaving the editor. These are some of the facilities provided by ConTEXT. I hope this summary helps to indicate the appropriateness of the editor for each individual programmer. The web site for the editor is www.fixedsys.com/context/ where pages for 'features', 'what users say', 'screen shots', 'faq' and 'download' will be found. Information is also available at zillionsofgames.com/ConTEXT.html including the downloading of the ZoG relevant highlighter files. Cheers, Ronald |
