I tried setting up a game so that there are buttons at the bottom of the board permitting you to open variants saved as separate zrfs. The idea was too cross-reference each variant so that the player could move easily from one to the other. (The file is too large if all the variants are saved in a single zrf and loading problems result.) But it appears that Zillions automatically disables the "choose side" option whenever the "open" command is used. You can still play the game versus the computer but the second player cannot be human.

I would recommend allowing the "choose side" option to work in these circumstances. Or if anyone knows of a way around this problem, I would be grateful if you could post it.

Maybe the following could work:
Make a separate variant with all buttons you wish
and add it as an additional variant to each game
you will connect in this manner.

This additional variant should be small enough to
do so and the open-commands does not longer occur
in the code of the main variant in the zrf
therefore you can play normally the game.

That's what I wound up doing and it works, although it would be nice if the other method worked as well.
