I'd like a "Show Captures" (Control-C) option under the "View" menu. At any time during a game, "Show Captures" would display the board graphic overlaid with the piece graphics of all captured pieces, with each captured piece appearing in its start position. Pressing any key (or clicking with the mouse) would revert to the normal game-in-progress board. |

This might work okay for games like Chess, but it wouldn't work so well for games like Fusion Chess, Metamorph Chess, Chessgi, and the combination of all three, Bedlam. If you want a game to show captures, you could write it so that it places captured pieces in a viewable area. Scripts for games like Shogi and Chessgi already do this, though it's because captured pieces change sides and may be reentered into the game. My Chessgi script could be modified to merely play Chess and place captured pieces along the sides of the board. |

Show Captures is on our list of desired features too, as it's a common feature of Chess programs. "Show Captures" implemented as Patrick described it would be useless in a lot of games where you'd want this feature, such as Nine Men's Morris. But... implementing it in the ZRF is not a good solution either because it will have a detrimental effect on Zillions' play, i.e. it will see the pieces as being moved, not captured. |

You could display the captured pieces in a new window. But my suggestion was designed to work without needing to use any more screen real estate, and without needing to add a side area onto the board graphic. And it includes visual cues which let the user quickly see what has happened. I suppose pieces which had no starting position, or ones which morphed into something else, could just be displayed at any open space on the board. And for some games, displaying captured pieces simply won't make sense at all. But however you end up implementing it will be appreciated! |

Hmm. But I need this for my game. Captured pieces would sometimes be returned to the game. With as many pieces and what, I would greatly appreciate this feature. Check it out at: http://www.refluxulfer.com/pret.htm |
