a true multiplayer mode server would be cool with a ranking database and ELO statistics, possibly with annual championships. playchess.com shows what's possible these days, but only for classic chess.

I know it is a lot of work to do that , however.

on sourceforge they develop a universal "board game server" with roughly this idea in mind...

The Yahoo Zillions chat room was a great idea, but it doesn't seem to be working. I have not been able to connect with anyone in the chat room, on those rare occasions when I am there. I guess the chat room is like VCR-style software in a Tivo world. It works fine, but it requires too much effort from the slothful masses such as myself. We need a server for Zillions! Although a new server just for Zillions is not very likely to succeed. One possibility might be to add Zillions capability to an existing server that already has lots of players. Since a high proportion of Zillions games are chess variants, maybe we could glom onto a chess server. For example, the Internet Chess Club website provides a description of what sort of interface would be necessary for a plugin for their "BlitzIn" client. A freely downloadable Zillions plugin for the ICC would probably generate interest in Zillions among ICC members, especially if spectators (who have the registered version of Zillions, and the plugin) were allowed to watch the games. I mention the ICC as opposed to a free chess server because ICC members have already demonstrated acceptance of the concept of paying for value received. So, they might be more likely than FICS members to pony up for Zillions, if they were interested. And if they got to see some of the cool chess variants and other games Zillions offers, they just might be interested. ICC already offers some variants, but they are restricted to an 8x8 grid. Lots of players play these variants. I believe there is an untapped market there. I have asked the ICC admins about this, and they seem amenable to the concept, as long as the games available are public domain. What do you think?

BTW for Twixt fanatics, there is now a realtime server for Twixt at www.k2z.org
