"View -> Flip Board" is fine for games where one player's pieces start on the bottom row(s) and the other player's pieces start on the top row(s); the access of symmetry is horizontal. But for games where one player has the left column(s) and the other player has the right column(s), the access of symmetry is vertical. And for games (such as Lines of Action) where one player has the top and bottom sides, and the other player has the left and right sides, the access of symmetry is diagonal. And in some games, rotating the board would make sense. If you added the capability to rotate the board 90 degrees clockwise, one could get any combination desired by a sequence of top/bottom flips and clockwise rotations. But for ease of use, you should include left/right flips and 90 degree counter-clockwise rotations too. I have been referring to "the board" without defining what "the board" is. Sometimes I want to "flip" the board graphic, sometimes I want to "flip" the position of the pieces on the board, and sometimes I want to "flip" the labeling of the board's positions. Usually I want some interesting combination of the above. I'm willing to accept bizarre behavior when using some combinations on odd-shaped boards. Common sense would prevent most people from requesting unreasonable flips! |

Another interesting feature would be "flip-piece-color", which would change the graphics for each piece according to the "turn-order". So if you had "(turn-order Red Blue)", "flip-piece-color" would change the Red pieces to the blue image, and the Blue pieces to the red image. If you had "(turn-order Red Blue Gold)", Red pieces would turn blue, Blue pieces would turn gold, and Gold pieces would turn red. In a game such as chess, the White Knights would trade images with the Black Knights, and so on. |

I believe that "flip" rotates through the turn order while "change-owner" converts to the active player. |

Don't confuse the "flip" and "change-owner" commands in the rules language with the "Flip Board" command which you can select from the "View" menu after starting a game in Zillions. I'm talking about additions to the "View -> Flip Board" command. |

By the way, if more kinds of board flips get supported, the "allow-flipping" rules file command should be extended to let game writers disable any unreasonable flips. |

To Patrick S. Duff About flipping the board: ------------------------- I have some idea about flipping and rotating the board... I think Zillions could support arbitrate board rotation. This mean that EVERYTHING wich is graphic will rotate, this is like turning arround the board (180°) is needed by most game. Another thing that could be nice is a 3D board vision. But unfortunately piece will stay 2D. What about real 3D with 3D representation of piece? Those effect are just graphic effect that are not to complicate to implement. Of course mouse clicking location and board position label need to be adapted to the rotation apply. Now I have a specific game in mind that require a specific fliping. The board need to be rotate be 180°, but piece graphic need to rotate accordingly. So this mean for me REALLY changing side (turning the board graphic and not the piece). So I think the idea of flipping the board should be enhance to support more creative flipping. David GLAUDE (glu@who.net) |

You can now flip the board in terms of the positions, but not in terms of the board graphic. See "prevent flipping" under the "option" command in the Language Reference for details. |
