Sam, could you please drop me a line at gmail, username freetrav, telling me how you did it? I'd like to update my collection, but there's no ftp any more. |

Since I have some bandwidth to burn, this is how to download the Zillions database: 1) Get wget http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/wget.htm 2) Wget is a *command line* application. This means that one has to be familiar with a "cmd" prompt; it does not have a fancy GUI. 3) Once one has wget, here is the incantation for getting the entire ZoG (Zillions of Games) database: wget -r -l 1 http://microblog.samiam.org/ZoG/ If one wants to have, in addition to all of the games hosted on zillions-of-games.com, Zillions games posted on Chess Variant's web page, Mats collection, Karl's collection, as well as a number of small collections elsewhere on the Internet: wget -r -l 2 http://microblog.samiam.org/ZoG/ I encourage people to find web hosting to mirror this collection so it does not disappear in the sands of time should the Zillions page go down again. |

Sam, thanks for this; after reading and understanding the docs for WGet, I've kicked off a snarf of your ZoG subsite using WinHTTrack, which I'd already had installed. I don't have the web space right now, but I will have this archive - and will attempt to update it regularly from the Zillions site (and have asked for the return of grab-ZoG-games-by-ftp) - stored on multiple hard disks and possibly burned to DVD as well, so that if it becomes necessary, I can supply the archive to someone who has the webspace but not the archive. |
