If you have played Zillions Shogi, you may have noticed the board does not flip. In Shogi, "White" and "Black" have the same color pieces. The only direct indication of whose pieces are whose, is the direction they point. The flip feature flips the board but not the direction of the pieces. So, if flipping were allowed for Shogi, it would result in a board display where both sides have pieces pointing the wrong way. No flipping means it is awkward to move 2nd, since you have to play from the top of the board. This also makes Net play impractical. I have created a modified Shogi package that solves this problem (I hope). I would like to test it out with another Zillions 2.0 user, before I submit it to the Zillions website. I also added some of the popular handicap variants. Please email me at twixt@cstone.net and I will send you the zip file. Hopefully, we can work out a time to meet on the Net. You may wonder why I bothered, since not being able to move second is no big deal, and there are already several popular Shogi servers available. Actually, moving 2nd is a big deal if you want to receive a handicap. And anything that could increase the popularity of Shogi outside of Japan, sounds good to me. |
