I have realized that it is possible to implement divinatory systems in Zillions, besides games and puzzles. As an example of this I have implemented I Ching, the ancient Chinese divination method. Obscure language is typical for this oracle (compare the oracle at Delphi, etc). Such obscure imagery can entice projections from the unconscious. It is well-known that the unconscious often carries solutions to our problems, like the chemist Kekulé, who found the ring structure of benzene in a dream. A more prosaic explanation is that a comment of any sort has the capacity of breaking one's habitual thinking, and make one see things differently. Nigel Pennick, however, in "Games of the Gods" argues that any divinatory system reflects upon the state of the universe at this very moment. He builds this notion on C.G. Jung's concept of synchronicity. Be that as it may, divinatory systems do actually work, one way or another. There is a wealth of divinatory methods in religious history, like runes divination, etc. |

Although I’m normally a skeptic, I’ve used tarot cards and pendulums precisely because I believe they are a useful way into my subconscious. There have been many times I’ve put down the cards and said,
“Wow! I never would have thought of that!”

I have now added Legge's translation of the commentary, by King Wan and Duke of Kau. The hexagram text derives from the Wilhelm translation. This is an ideal combination. King Wan's and Duke of Kau's comments seem quite "delirious", which is ideal. The comments in the Wilhelm translation are somewhat prosaic, which is not suitable for this spiritual book. |
